Peer-Run Respite

Afiya is a short-term (one to seven days) respite home located in Northampton Massachusetts run by people with lived experience that may include “extreme emotional or altered states, psychiatric diagnoses, trauma histories, living without a home, navigating the mental health and other public systems, addictions and more.” Afiya is part of the Western Massachusetts Recovery Learning Community.

Afiya (A-FEE-yah) is a Swahili word that means “physical, emotional and spiritual health and wholeness.’  Afiya is one of ony 13 peer-run respite programs in the country. This video gives an overview of Massachusetts’ only peer-run respite program.
